Maharashtra Day, commonly known as Maharashtra Din, is a state holiday in the Indian state of Maharashtra, commemorating the formation of the state of Maharashtra from the division of the Bombay State on 1 May 1960.

  • Maharashtra Day is a regional public holiday in the Indian state of Maharashtra on May 1st.This holiday celebrates the anniversary of the formation of the state on this day in 1960.
  • Note that several other states also observe a holiday on this day for International Labour Day.

Why May Day is celebrated as Maharashtra Day :(History)

  • On this day, 57 years ago, the existing state of Maharashtra was formed. The States Reorganisation Act, 1956, defined boundaries for states within India on the basis of languages.
  • The then Bombay though had people speaking various languages like Marathi, Gujarati, kutchi and Konkani, which obviously did not work out. So the Sanyukt Maharastra Andolan started demanding a separate state.
  • The protest continued till 1960 when the Bombay Reorganization Act was passed by India’s Parliament to divide the multilingual state of Bombay into Gujarat and Maharashtra, with Ahmedabad. The legislation came into effect on May 1, 1960.
  • Even as the rest of the world celebrates International Worker’s Day on May 1, Maharashtra continues to celebrate a much bigger event in its own history. A parade is held at Shivaji Park in Mumbai where the Governor addresses a large gathering. All offices in the state remain closed and sale of alcohol is prohibited.

History of Maharashtra Day

  • When India gained its independence from Britain, the regional constitution of the country was a lot different. Hundreds of princely states had to be united and a state system established to administer the nation.
  • In 1956, The States Reorganisation Act defined boundaries for states within India on the basis of languages. While many of the new states are familiar to us today, it did throw up some anomalies - such as the Bombay state which squished together people speaking languages like Marathi, Gujarati, Kutchi and Konkani which covered two distinct linguistic groups.
  • Due to these differences, a movement emerged to divide the Bombay State into two states — one where people primarily spoke Gujarati and Kutchhi and the other where people primarily spoke Marathi and Konkani.
  • As a result, the states of Maharashtra and Gujarat came into existence according to the Bombay Reorganisation Act, 1960 enacted by Parliament on April 25th 1960. The act came into effect on May 1st 1960. Under the Bombay Reorganisation Act, Maharashtra and Gujarat were divided and both states attained statehood.
  • This holiday applies to schools, offices and companies under the jurisdiction of the State and Central Government, which celebrate the day by organising various programmes.
  • Maharashtra Day is commemorated by a parade at Shivaji Park in Dadar where the Governor of Maharashtra makes a speech. Other celebrations in the state include traditional Lavani music performances, folk songs and narration of poetries of popular Marathi saints.

  • The whole world celebrates May 1 as an International Labour day; however, very few people know that May 1 is also celebrated as 'Maharashtra Day' and 'Gujarat Day'. The first day of May is significant for both the states as it was on May 1 when both the existing states of Maharashtra and Gujarat were formed. Therefore, even if the whole world celebrates May 1 as Labour Day, the people of Maharashtra and Gujarat celebrate a much bigger event.

Countries and dependencies coloured by observance of International Workers' Day or a different variant of May Day or Labour Day:
Labour Day falls or may fall on 1 May
Another public holiday on 1 May
No public holiday on 1 May, but Labour Day on a different date
No public holiday on 1 May and no Labour Day
Labour Day is annual holiday to celebrate the achievements of workers. Labour Day has its origins in the labour union movement, specifically the eight-hour day movement, which advocated eight hours for work, eight hours for recreation, and eight hours for rest.
For most countries, Labour Day is synonymous with, or linked with, International Workers' Day, which occurs on 1 May. For other countries, Labour Day is celebrated on a different date, often one with special significance for the labour movement in that country. Labour Day is a public holiday in many countries.
In Canada and the United States, the holiday is celebrated on the first Monday of September and considered the unofficial end of summer, with summer vacations ending and students returning to school around then.

International Workers' Day

For most countries, "Labour Day" is synonymous with, or linked with, International Workers' Day, which occurs on 1 May. Some countries vary the actual date of their celebrations so that the holiday occurs on a Monday close to 1 May.
Some countries have a holiday at or around this date, but it is not a 'Labour day' celebration.
