The Different types of forts in India.

  • Jala-Durga (Water fort) surrounded by natural (sea or river) water bodies.
  • Dhanvana- or Maru-Durga (Desert Fort)
  • Giri-Durga (Hillfort) Located on a flat hill summit.
  • Vana-Durga (Forest fort): Surrounded by a dense forest over a distance of at least 14km. 
  • Mahi-Durga (Earthen fort) surrounded by earthen walls.
  • Nri-Durga (Human fort)
  • Defended by a large number of loyal and experienced warriors. Usually a city fortress, populated by a substantial garrison.

Forts are different from both castles and palaces in that its not a residence, but rather a military fortification.
 These structures have been built specifically with war in mind and are used to defend specific territories.
